Neal Ardley has targeted two more signings to make sure AFC Wimbledon are ready to compete in League One.

The Dons have already added Dominic Poleon, Chris Whelpdale, Dean Parrett and Ryan Clarke to their ranks, and all four played a part in last night’s 3-2 friendly defeat to Crystal Palace.

However, Ardley has admitted he needs reinforcements ahead the season curtain-raiser at Walsall on August 6.

Dons have been linked with striker Bobby Zamora, but Ardley poured cold water on the speculation.

He said: “We wanted to get a left-back in who can cover a couple of positions and we’ve had Shaun Kelly on trial who we have been very impressed with.

“We’re trying to sort something out with him as we think he will be a good addition.

“We’re also desperate for a centre forward, it’s hard, but we’re trying to put decent money into it and get the quality in to our club.

"I have never had a conversation with Bobby Zamora or any representative of Bobby Zamora. I know nothing about it.”

He added: “However, I speak to a lot of managers and they all say they’re looking for a forward so that part of it is proving difficult.

“We won’t throw money at those who won’t work for us.

“We’ve got what we think is decent money for us as a club, but now we are a league higher, the sort of player we’re trying to get is another level so that money isn’t quite as much as we think.”

With several clubs in a similar position, many are looking to Premier League academies for cheaper loans, but Ardley is not entirely convinced.

He said: “It has to be someone who can fit in with what we’re doing.

“A lot of the players at the top clubs who we think could do a job often want to go to higher clubs, and their wages are particularly high even if they are offset.”
