Scammers attempting to trick elderly and vulnerable people into giving out bank details have struck twice in Worcester Park.

A woman, 81, of Brookside Crescent, Worcester Park was called on Tuesday at 10.30am but refused to be taken in by the scam, but later that day a second woman, 89, of St Philips Avenue was called at 2pm.

The victim was convinced to reveal her PIN and handed her bank card to a "courier" who later called at her door. She had £500 stolen from her account.

The scam works by the criminal calling pretending to be your bank or police stating your bank cards are at risk from fraudulent use.

The caller will say that your cards need to be replaced and they will ask for your PIN and arrange to have your bank card collected by a courier, such as an unwitting local taxi company.

Though cases of this scam are becoming rarer, Sutton police have urged residents to be vigilant and report any such encounters by calling 101 five minutes after the call.
