A friend has paid tribute to Malcolm McKinlay, who police believe was found dead in Surbiton.

‘Gentle and kind’ Mr McKinlay was a member of the Surbiton Club and worked as a bar steward there, bringing many years of experience with him.

Friend Bob Tyler paid tribute to Mr McKinlay, who had been missing from his home for two days last week.

Mr Tyler said: “This is devastating news about a man much loved, respected and appreciated in Surbiton. It is very upsetting for everyone that knew Malcolm – he was so gentle and kind.

“He loved Surbiton, knew it was special and like all of us Surbitonians, had great comfort with the sense of community and real friendship that makes our town special.

“It is sad that Malcolm didn’t turn to his Surbiton family of friends for comfort and share his problems with those who knew him and loved him.”

Mr McKinlay, 61, from Surbiton, was last seen at his home at 9.45am on Wednesday, September 24.

Police were called to reports of a man collapsed in Victoria Park in Balaclava Road, Surbiton, at 10.45am on Friday.

Mr Tyler said: “Malcolm was a member of the Surbiton Club and later became a Bar Steward of the club, bringing his years of experience as an Air New Zealand Purser.

“When behind the bar his skills, kindness and personality were unique, serving every member, not only with a smile and a joke but also with genuine warmth.”

A Kingston police spokesman said enquiries are ongoing to make a formal identification but police strongly believe the male to be Malcolm McKinlay.

His next of kin has been informed.

The spokesman added that at this stage the death did not appear to be suspicious. Did you know Mr McKinlay?
